1) NC State Senator Ellie Kinnaird (Orange & Person Counties) has introduced a bill (S297) to "require the report of an accident involving a motor vehicle and a bicycle where the total property damage exceeds five hundred dollars." The current statute (G.S. 20-4.01(33b)) defines a reportable crash as one either resulting in injury or $1000 in property damage. The new bill would reduce this to $ 500 where a bicycle is involved. That will force the police to get involved in lots more bike-car accidents. A police report putting fault for the accident on the motorist would make it easier when seeking insurance coverage.
The bill's cosponsor's in the Senate include Bob Atwater (Chatham, Durham and Lee counties), Janet Cowell (Wake County) and Joe Sam Queen (western NC). Please contact them to express your appreciation and support. If you're not in their districts, contact your state senator to express your support for S297. Also contact your NC State Congressional Representative to request their sponsorship and support in the NC House.
The bill is currently being review by the Senate Civil Judiciary Committee, chaired by Martin Nesbitt <martinn@ncleg.net>. Senators Kinnaird and Cowell are on that committee.
2) Yeah, I know you've filled out transportation surveys before, but this one is REALLY short and gives you an opportunity to support larger bike racks and bike lockers as well as biodiesel and even a free-form fill-in whatever you want box. Survey
3) The Monday Night Bike Ride starts up again Monday March 12. We will leave at 6:00 pm. Try to get there around 5:30 pm. We still leave from in front of the old Bike Shop, even though it is not there.
Parking is a little hard to find. I usually park on the opposite side of Glenwood Avenue from the Bike Shop, down past Cody's restaurant.
